“Manufactured housing is a vital part of HUD’s prescription to make safe, quality, desirable, affordable homes available to millions of hard-working Americans. The foundations of a better tomorrow are built with the new techniques and new technologies of today, and for manufactured housing, that time is now.” – Secretary Ben Carson.
At this year’s 2019 MHI Convention in New Orleans, we had the pleasure of seeing Ben Carson (secretary of HUD) for the second year in a row. There has been a negative stigma about our industry, sourced from news outlets and comedians such as John Oliver. Those who are spreading toxic facts, about one of the most logical affordable housing solutions, really need to take a seat and look at the facts. Secretary Carson addressed the demand for affordable housing, the statistics comparing stick built homes to manufactured homes, and emphasized the fact to crush the stigma about “trailer trash”. He addressed how beautiful these communities are becoming, and the amazing weather resilience of Post- Hurricane Andrew manufactured homes.
Secretary Carson added that there will be a show held at the national mall in Washington DC by “HUDgov” June 1-5. The intent will be to educate citizens on the beauty, cost efficiency, and durability of these manufactured homes. Those same homes on display, will be sent to communities for people to live in after the show. Hopefully together, we can give the people of this nation’s nest for their family, and turn the “American Dream” into an “American Reality”.
